In 1946, the former boxers Dwight "Bucky" Bleichert and Lee Blanchard are policemen in Los Angeles. Lee has a good relationship with his chief and uses a box fight between them to promote the department and get a raise to the police force. They succeed and are promoted to homicide detectives, working together. Bucky becomes a close friend of Lee and his girlfriend Kay Lake, forming a triangle of love. When the corpse of the aspirant actress Elizabeth Short is found mutilated, Lee becomes obsessed to solve the case called by the press Black Dahlia. Meanwhile, Bucky's investigation leads him to a Madeleine Linscott, the daughter of a powerful and wealthy constructor that resembles the Black Dahlia. In an environment of corruption and lies, Bucky discloses hidden truths.

"The Boat That Rocked" is an ensemble comedy in which the romance takes place between the young people of the '60s and pop music. It's about a band of rogue DJs that captivated Britain, playing the music that defined a generation and standing up to a government that, incomprehensibly, preferred jazz. The Count, a big, brash, American god of the airwaves; Quentin, the boss of Radio Rock -- a pirate radio station in the middle of the North Sea that's populated by an eclectic crew of rock and roll DJs; Gavin, the greatest DJ in Britain who has just returned from his drug tour of America to reclaim his rightful position; Dave, an ironic, intelligent and cruelly funny co-broadcaster; and a fearsome British government official out for blood against the drug takers and lawbreakers of a once-great nation.

Ketika Carl (Tom Sturridge) dikeluarkan dari sekolah, ia tidak punya pilihan selain menuruti kemauan ibunya untuk dikirim menemui Quentin (Bill Nighy), ayah wali Carl, yang berada di atas sebuah kapal di luar perairan Inggris.Quentin ternyata adalah satu dari tim radio ilegal yang memutar lagu-lagu rock and roll dari atas kapal yang membuang sauh di wilayah internasional. Tim radio yang mengudara selama 24 jam penuh itu dipimpin oleh The Count (Philip Seymour Hoffman) dan beranggotakan para pecinta musik rock yang juga menjadi DJ dari atas kapal itu. Dalam waktu singkat, radio ini berhasil meraih simpati anak muda Inggris yang saat itu haus akan musik-musik rock and roll. BBC, satu-satunya radio di Inggris saat itu, tak memberikan porsi untuk mengudarakan musik rock and roll. Selain itu, BBC waktu itu belum mengudara selama 24 jam penuh. An unremarkable ghost-writer has landed a lucrative contract to redact the memoirs of Adam Lang, the former UK Prime Minister. After dominating British politics for years, Lang has retired with his wife to the USA. He lives on an island, in luxurious, isolated premises complete with a security detail and a secretarial staff. Soon, Adam Lang gets embroiled in a major scandal with international ramifications that reveals how far he was ready to go in order to nurture UK's "special relationship" with the USA. But before this controversy has started, before even he has closed the deal with the publisher, the ghost-writer gets unmistakable signs that the turgid draft he is tasked to put into shape inexplicably constitutes highly sensitive material.

Tidak semua penulis cukup mujur untuk bisa menghasilkan sebuah karya yang membuatnya terkenal dan bergelimang harta. Beberapa harus rela menjadi penulis yang tak pernah disebutkan namanya atau lebih dikenal dengan istilah ghost writer. Memang pekerjaan ini seolah mudah karena penulis tidak secara langsung bertanggung jawab pada hasil tulisannya. Tapi bukan berarti pekerjaan ini sama sekali tidak ada risikonya.Dalam kasus ghost writer yang diperankan oleh Ewan McGregor ini masalahnya tak semudah itu. Awalnya penulis ini mendapat tugas dari agennya untuk melanjutkan penulisan biografi mantan Perdana Menteri Inggris, Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan). Sang agen meyakinkan bahwa pekerjaan ini tak akan terlalu sulit dan kesempatan seperti ini tak akan datang dua kali. Berbekal keyakinan itulah sang ghost writer ini berangkat ke pulau tempat tinggal Adam Lang. Ternyata, sebagian dari biografi itu sudah ditulis oleh seorang ghost writer lain namun tidak terselesaikan karena sang penulis ini tiba-tiba meninggal. Baru juga sang ghost writer ini memulai bekerja, masalah lain muncul. Adam Lang dituduh telah menyerahkan seorang tersangka tindak terorisme pada CIA untuk disiksa. Skandal ini segera saja menjadi head line di mana-mana dan mulai banyak warga yang berdatangan untuk memprotes tindakan Adam Lang. Semakin jauh ghost writer ini mengumpulkan fakta, semakin jelas pula kalau ada kemungkinan bahwa ghost writer sebelumnya meninggal karena dibunuh dan Adam Lang bisa jadi adalah mata-mata CIA selama ia bertugas sebagai Perdana Menteri Inggris.
