Suatu hari penjara Blok E kedatangan tamu istimewa bernama John Coffey. Tuduhan sebagai sebagai pelaku pedofil sekaligus pembunuhan telah menyeret John ke dalam gelapnya penjara; Mengerikan karena ia benar-benar takut kegelapan bahkan tak segan ia menangis agar lampu tetap menyala. Meskipun dengan tubuh raksasa membuatnya terkesan berbahaya, tapi siapa mengira penjara muram yang berisi para tahanan dengan vonis maksimum (hukuman mati) justru menjadi lebih hidup dari tempat manapun sejak kedatangan John. Terlebih John Coffey adalah sebuah mukjizat,karena telah berhasil menyembuhkan infeksi saluran kencing parah seorang awak penjara bernama Boss Edgecomb (Tom Hanks). Interaksi dengan narapidana lain pun teramat baik, bahkan para sipir begitu menghargainya. Apakah hukuman mati dapat dihindarinya terlebih setelah mampu menolong istri kepala sipir yang menderita tumor otak??
